Terezín: a day trip from Prague with a driver

Terezín is fifty minutes' drive from Prague. The fortress town was built at the end of the 18th century by Joseph II, who named it after his mother, Maria Theresa. During the Second World War the Nazis turned it into a Jewish ghetto and the Small Fortress into a Gestapo prison. It is a trip that needs time and calm, and it is better suited to adults and older children.
How the day goes
Terezín has two parts, separated by the river Ohře. On one bank is the Small Fortress, on the other the town itself, where the ghetto was. They are about a kilometre apart; the driver takes you from one to the other and waits. The Small Fortress takes about an hour and a half, and seeing everything takes three to four hours. Leaving Prague around nine and returning in the afternoon is a comfortable pace.
What is open
In the Small Fortress you walk through the cells, the courtyards and the execution ground, and a permanent exhibition tells the prison's story. In the town there are the crematorium, the columbarium and the memorial sites of the ghetto. The Ghetto Museum is closed from 2 November 2026 until 2029 for a major reconstruction and a new exhibition. In the meantime the Terezín Memorial presents the history of the ghetto in the former Magdeburg Barracks, which also hold an exhibition on cultural life in the ghetto: the music, theatre and art that were made here against all odds.
Combining it
Five kilometres from Terezín lies Litoměřice, with a large market square, a cathedral on Cathedral Hill and vineyards above the Elbe. After a heavy morning in the fortress it is a good place for lunch and a change of air. Add the stop to your booking and we confirm the price with it in advance.

It is about 60 km from central Prague. The outward journey costs 2 240 CZK in a Mercedes E-Class (1–3 passengers) or 2 761 CZK in a V-Class (up to 7 passengers), VAT included.
