Dresden Christmas markets — a day trip from Prague

Dresden is an hour and three quarters from Prague, which makes its Christmas markets an easy day trip: we pick you up at your hotel in the morning, the driver waits while you explore the markets, and you are back in Prague in the evening.

When the markets are on

The 592nd Striezelmarkt runs on the Altmarkt from 25 November to 24 December 2026, daily from 10:00 to 21:00 (on the opening day from 16:30, on 24 December until 14:00). Around it there are smaller markets — the Advent market on the Neumarkt by the Frauenkirche and the medieval Christmas market in the Stallhof of the Residence Palace. December weekends are the busiest; weekdays are noticeably calmer.

What makes it special

The Striezelmarkt was first held in 1434 and is one of the oldest Christmas markets in Germany. It takes its name from the Striezel, the old word for Dresden Stollen; traditionally, on the Saturday before the second Sunday of Advent, the Stollen Festival parades a giant stollen through the old town. In the middle of the market stands a walk-in Christmas pyramid more than fourteen metres tall.

How the day goes

We usually leave Prague around nine and are in Dresden before eleven. The driver drops you by the old town and waits — up to six hours of waiting is included in the day-trip price. You can add a stop at the Bastei bridge in Saxon Switzerland; it is best on the way there, while it is light, and adds about an hour and a half.

What it costs

The fare from Prague to Dresden is 5 480 CZK in the E-Class estate (up to 3 passengers) or 6 901 CZK in the V-Class (up to 7 passengers), VAT included. If you return the same day and the driver waits no more than six hours, the return leg is half the outbound fare — the whole day in the E-Class comes to 8 220 CZK. Germany charges no motorway tolls for cars. For journeys outside the Czech Republic payment in advance is required, at the latest 24 hours before pick-up.
