Prague to Dresden — illustrative photo

We drive both ways: Prague → Dresden and Dresden → Prague. The nearest large German city — under two hours from Prague on the motorway through the Bohemian Central Uplands.

The route in numbers

Distance — approximately 150 km by road

Driving time — about 1 hour 45 minutes of driving, without stops

Cars — Mercedes-Benz E-Class estate (1–3 passengers) or V-Class (up to 7 passengers)

Why by car

At this distance the car is simply the fastest option. The train takes two and a quarter hours from Prague main station and runs every two hours; with an early meeting or with children that is an unnecessary complication.

Tolls and the border

Germany charges no motorway toll for passenger cars, so nothing is added on this route. The drive runs on the D8 past Ústí nad Labem, crosses at Petrovice and continues on the German A17 — motorway the whole way. The driver drops you right at your hotel or in the Altstadt; parking in the centre is not your problem.

And the same in reverse

The opposite direction is just as common — from Dresden to Prague, with pick-up at your hotel or at Dresden airport. Book the return leg together with the outbound one.

Tolls and charges

Germany charges no motorway toll for passenger cars, so nothing is added on this route. For journeys leaving the Czech Republic, payment of the agreed price in advance is a condition of carriage, at the latest 24 hours before pick-up.

What it costs

The price follows our price list, is calculated from the actual road distance and is agreed in advance as a fixed sum — there is no meter. It includes fuel, motorway tolls in the Czech Republic and standard luggage.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class estate — base fare 800 CZK incl. VAT including the first 20 km, 36 CZK per km up to 150 km and 30 CZK per km beyond

Mercedes-Benz V-Class — base fare 921 CZK incl. VAT including the first 20 km, 46 CZK per km up to 150 km and 38 CZK per km beyond

From our price list this route works out at 5 480 CZK incl. VAT in the E-Class estate, 6 901 CZK incl. VAT in the V-Class — one way. The empty return leg is not charged.

The exact amount for your particular pick-up address is worked out by the calculator on the home page, which also allows for current traffic. The full price list is on the Price list page.

Day trip: back the same day

For journeys outside the Czech Republic the return leg is 50 % of the outbound fare, provided you return the same day and the driver waits no more than six hours — on a long-distance run he drives back empty anyway. For longer waiting or a return on another day, the agreed waiting rate applies; we settle it in advance and state it in the booking confirmation. The calculator gives you the price.

Worth seeing in Dresden

The historic centre of Dresden burned in the air raids of February 1945, and much of what you see today was built again. The Frauenkirche lay as a heap of stones for more than forty years and reopened only in 2005 — the dark original blocks set back into the new masonry are still visible from the square.

The Zwinger holds the Old Masters gallery with Raphael's Sistine Madonna, and the royal palace the Green Vault, one of the richest treasuries in Europe. The Striezelmarkt was first held in 1434 and is among the oldest Christmas markets in Germany; in December it makes the centre noticeably fuller.

For its collections and the baroque skyline above the Elbe the city is called Florence on the Elbe. It is famous for Christstollen, the heavy butter loaf with dried fruit that may carry the name only if baked in Dresden — every December one giant stollen is paraded through the streets on a cart. A little downstream, in Meissen, Europe's first hard-paste porcelain has been made since 1710.

On the palace wall runs the Procession of Princes, the largest porcelain mural in the world — 23,000 Meissen tiles that came through the raids almost undamaged. Next to it stands the Semperoper, where Wagner's Flying Dutchman and Tannhäuser were first performed. Half an hour upstream begins Saxon Switzerland, with the Bastei rock bridge.

In December: a day trip to the Dresden Christmas markets — back the same day for half the outbound fare.
