Prague to Brno — illustrative photo

We drive both ways: Prague → Brno and Brno → Prague. The most common business route in the country. Along the D1, picked up at the office or at home and dropped right at the meeting.

The route in numbers

Distance — approximately 205 km by road

Driving time — about 2 hours 15 minutes of driving, without stops

Cars — Mercedes-Benz E-Class estate (1–3 passengers) or V-Class (up to 7 passengers)

Why by car

The train takes two and a half hours and is comfortable, but Brno station is still not your destination. With a meeting in Královo Pole or on Vídeňská you arrive sooner by car than by train plus taxi — and you can work on the way.

There and back in a day

Most of these trips are a meeting and back the same day. The driver either waits or leaves and returns at an agreed time — whichever works out cheaper. Waiting on long-distance trips is agreed individually by its length, not at the city rate, so it pays to tell us in advance how long the meeting will run.

And the same in reverse

Brno to Prague is just as frequent — typically out in the morning for a meeting and back in the evening. Both legs are booked together; the driver waits or returns later.

What it costs

The price follows our price list, is calculated from the actual road distance and is agreed in advance as a fixed sum — there is no meter. It includes fuel, motorway tolls in the Czech Republic and standard luggage.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class estate — base fare 800 CZK incl. VAT including the first 20 km, 36 CZK per km up to 150 km and 30 CZK per km beyond

Mercedes-Benz V-Class — base fare 921 CZK incl. VAT including the first 20 km, 46 CZK per km up to 150 km and 38 CZK per km beyond

From our price list this route works out at 7 130 CZK incl. VAT in the E-Class estate, 8 991 CZK incl. VAT in the V-Class — one way. The empty return leg is not charged.

The exact amount for your particular pick-up address is worked out by the calculator on the home page, which also allows for current traffic. The full price list is on the Price list page.

Day trip: back the same day

If you return on the same day, the return leg is charged at 50 % of the outbound fare — you have the driver for the whole day and waiting is not counted by the hour, it is included. If you return on another day, both legs are charged in full, because the driver drives back empty in the meantime and comes out for you again. The calculator works out both options — just choose when you are coming back.

Worth seeing in Brno

Brno is a walking city — the old town is small and everything that matters lies within twenty minutes of everything else. Špilberk fortress looms above it; under the Habsburgs it became one of the harshest prisons in the empire, and the casemates now hold a museum. The cathedral on Petrov rings noon an hour early, at eleven — legend has it the townspeople tricked a Swedish general that way during the 1645 siege, after he swore to leave if the city held until midday.

Villa Tugendhat, built by Mies van der Rohe in 1930, is a UNESCO site and sells out weeks ahead — without a reservation you will not get in. If you are coming for a trade fair or the Grand Prix at the Masaryk Circuit, expect a full city and higher room rates.

In the abbey in Old Brno, Gregor Mendel grew peas and in 1865 set out the laws of heredity on them — genetics was born here, though the world only noticed after his death. In the passage of the Old Town Hall hangs the Brno dragon, in fact a stuffed crocodile, and beside it a wheel said to have been made and rolled from Lednice in a single day to win a bet.

Half an hour out of town lies the Moravian Karst, with the Macocha abyss 138 metres deep and the Punkva caves, part of which you travel by boat. Brno houses the Constitutional Court and the Supreme Court, which makes it the country's second centre after Prague, and vegetables have been sold on the Cabbage Market without a break since the 13th century.
