Prague – Budapest

We drive both ways: Prague → Budapest and back. Just under five hours via Brno and Bratislava — most often as part of a Prague – Vienna – Budapest loop.

The route in numbers

Distance — approximately 525 km by road

Driving time — approximately 4 hours 45 minutes of driving without stops

Vehicles — Mercedes-Benz E-Class estate (1–3 passengers) or V-Class (up to 7 passengers)

Why by car

The train takes over six hours, and flying means two airports for an hour in the air. By car you go door to door; Bratislava is right on the route and Vienna is a short detour, so either makes an easy stop.

The route

Along the D1 to Brno, on to Bratislava and along the Hungarian M1 to Budapest. The whole route is motorway.

And the same in reverse

We drive Budapest → Prague just as often as the other way round. Both legs can be booked together, and in between the driver either waits or drives back — whichever works out cheaper.

Tolls and charges

Slovakia and Hungary both charge an electronic motorway vignette. Tolls outside the Czech Republic are billed separately according to our price list and stated in the booking confirmation. For journeys leaving the Czech Republic, payment of the agreed price in advance is a condition, at the latest 24 hours before pick-up.

What it costs

The price follows our price list, is calculated from the actual road distance and is agreed in advance as a fixed sum — there is no meter. It includes fuel, motorway tolls in the Czech Republic and standard luggage.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class estate — base fare 800 CZK incl. VAT including the first 20 km, 36 CZK per km up to 150 km and 30 CZK per km beyond

Mercedes-Benz V-Class — base fare 921 CZK incl. VAT including the first 20 km, 46 CZK per km up to 150 km and 38 CZK per km beyond

From our price list this route works out at 16 730 CZK incl. VAT in the E-Class estate, 21 151 CZK incl. VAT in the V-Class — one way. The empty return leg is not charged.

The exact amount for your particular pick-up address is worked out by the calculator on the home page, which also allows for current traffic. The full price list is on the Price list page.

Day trip: back the same day

For journeys outside the Czech Republic the return leg is 50 % of the outbound fare, provided you return the same day and the driver waits no more than six hours — on a long-distance run he drives back empty anyway. For longer waiting or a return on another day, the agreed waiting rate applies; we settle it in advance and state it in the booking confirmation. The calculator gives you the price.

Worth seeing in Budapest

Budapest only came into being in 1873, when Buda, Pest and Óbuda were merged — which is why each bank of the Danube feels different. The Parliament is one of the largest parliament buildings in the world, with 691 rooms; it is 96 metres tall in honour of the year 896, when the Magyars arrived in the Carpathian Basin. The M1 metro line from 1896 is the oldest on the European continent and still runs along its original route. The Széchenyi Baths have eighteen pools fed by a hot spring, and in the outdoor pools people play chess all year round. The former Jewish quarter is home to the ruin bars — pubs in crumbling buildings furnished with flea-market finds; the best known, Szimpla Kert, started out in an abandoned building. Budapest combines well with Vienna in a single loop; just mention the stop when booking — it counts as an intermediate stop, not a second journey.
