Prague to Munich — illustrative photo

We drive both ways: Prague → Munich and Munich → Prague. Munich has no fast direct rail link from Prague and flying rarely pays off — on this route the car is the sensible choice.

The route in numbers

Distance — approximately 380 km by road

Driving time — about 4 hours of driving, without stops

Cars — Mercedes-Benz E-Class estate (1–3 passengers) or V-Class (up to 7 passengers)

Why by car

By train with a change it takes five and a half to six hours. Flying lands you at Munich Airport, which is another 40 km from the city, and check-in and transfers eat up whatever you saved in the air. In a car you leave when you want and finish at the address.

Trade fairs and Oktoberfest

We regularly drive to trade fairs at Messe München and to Oktoberfest — in both cases the real problem is parking and the late-night return, and a driver removes both. The V-Class seats seven, so a whole team travels together; for two or three passengers with normal luggage the E-Class estate is enough.

And the same in reverse

Munich to Prague works the same, including pick-up right at Munich Airport or at the exhibition grounds. Both legs can be arranged in a single booking.

Tolls and charges

Germany charges no motorway toll for passenger cars, so nothing is added on this route. For journeys leaving the Czech Republic, payment of the agreed price in advance is a condition of carriage, at the latest 24 hours before pick-up.

What it costs

The price follows our price list, is calculated from the actual road distance and is agreed in advance as a fixed sum — there is no meter. It includes fuel, motorway tolls in the Czech Republic and standard luggage.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class estate — base fare 800 CZK incl. VAT including the first 20 km, 36 CZK per km up to 150 km and 30 CZK per km beyond

Mercedes-Benz V-Class — base fare 921 CZK incl. VAT including the first 20 km, 46 CZK per km up to 150 km and 38 CZK per km beyond

From our price list this route works out at 12 380 CZK incl. VAT in the E-Class estate, 15 641 CZK incl. VAT in the V-Class — one way. The empty return leg is not charged.

The exact amount for your particular pick-up address is worked out by the calculator on the home page, which also allows for current traffic. The full price list is on the Price list page.

Day trip: back the same day

For journeys outside the Czech Republic the return leg is 50 % of the outbound fare, provided you return the same day and the driver waits no more than six hours — on a long-distance run he drives back empty anyway. For longer waiting or a return on another day, the agreed waiting rate applies; we settle it in advance and state it in the booking confirmation. The calculator gives you the price.

Worth seeing in Munich

Everything starts on Marienplatz, where the glockenspiel on the new town hall tower sets its figures moving at eleven and twelve, and at five in the afternoon in summer. A short walk away stands the Residenz, seat of the Bavarian rulers, and on the edge of the city the Nymphenburg palace and its park.

The English Garden is larger than Central Park, and right at its edge surfers take turns on a standing wave in the Eisbach stream — all year round, winter included. For the technically minded there is the Deutsches Museum, one of the largest science and technology museums in the world; walking all of it easily takes a day.

Munich is known for its beer gardens — under the chestnut trees at the Hofbräuhaus and in the English Garden you may bring your own food, but the beer must be bought there. The Weisswurst belongs here too, and by old rule it must not hear the noon bell, because it was once made in the morning and did not keep. BMW is based here, with its museum by the Olympic park, as is Bayern, the most successful football club in Germany.

Two hours south stands Neuschwanstein, the castle of Ludwig II that Disney drew its fairy-tale castle from — tickets are bought in advance and you will not get in on the day. In Munich, Bayern play at the Allianz Arena, whose shell changes colour, and in December Marienplatz holds one of Germany's oldest Christmas markets, recorded as far back as the 14th century.
