Prague to Karlovy Vary — illustrative photo

We drive both ways: Prague → Karlovy Vary and Karlovy Vary → Prague. To the spa town along the new D6 — under two hours from door to hotel, often straight from the airport.

The route in numbers

Distance — approximately 130 km by road

Driving time — about 1 hour 45 minutes of driving, without stops

Cars — Mercedes-Benz E-Class estate (1–3 passengers) or V-Class (up to 7 passengers)

Why by car

The train takes over three hours on a roundabout route via Chomutov; the coach takes two and a quarter to the terminal. Most guests also arrive at Václav Havel Airport, from where the car goes direct — with no detour into central Prague.

Spa stays and the festival

We typically drive guests at the start and end of a spa stay, when it is about luggage and comfort rather than a saved hour. During the film festival parking in town is difficult and accommodation is spread along the whole valley — the driver sets you down at the door and leaves, so parking is never your problem.

And the same in reverse

We drive back from Karlovy Vary to Prague the same way — to an address, to the station or straight to the airport if you are flying out. Book the return with the arrival.

What it costs

The price follows our price list, is calculated from the actual road distance and is agreed in advance as a fixed sum — there is no meter. It includes fuel, motorway tolls in the Czech Republic and standard luggage.

Mercedes-Benz E-Class estate — base fare 800 CZK incl. VAT including the first 20 km, 36 CZK per km up to 150 km and 30 CZK per km beyond

Mercedes-Benz V-Class — base fare 921 CZK incl. VAT including the first 20 km, 46 CZK per km up to 150 km and 38 CZK per km beyond

From our price list this route works out at 4 760 CZK incl. VAT in the E-Class estate, 5 981 CZK incl. VAT in the V-Class — one way. The empty return leg is not charged.

The exact amount for your particular pick-up address is worked out by the calculator on the home page, which also allows for current traffic. The full price list is on the Price list page.

Day trip: back the same day

If you return on the same day, the return leg is charged at 50 % of the outbound fare — you have the driver for the whole day and waiting is not counted by the hour, it is included. If you return on another day, both legs are charged in full, because the driver drives back empty in the meantime and comes out for you again. The calculator works out both options — just choose when you are coming back.

Worth seeing in Karlovy Vary

The town sits on hot springs, strung along the Teplá river in a narrow valley, so it walks itself — up one side and back. The Vřídlo geyser shoots some twelve metres and is the hottest of the springs; the drinkable ones are taken along the colonnades from flat porcelain cups with a spout in the handle.

Above the town stands the Diana lookout tower, reached by a funicular from the Imperial hotel. Becherovka is made here, and the Moser glassworks runs tours of the furnace hall where the glass is still blown by hand.

Besides the springs, the town is known for its spa wafers, baked between two hot plates and eaten warm, and for the film festival that turns the Thermal hotel into the largest cinema in the country for two weeks. Legend has it the town was founded by Charles IV, whose hounds stumbled on a hot spring while chasing a stag.

Above the colonnade stands the Grandhotel Pupp, where Casino Royale and Last Holiday were filmed — in both it plays itself. Spring salt is drawn from the geyser, a mineral mixture pharmacies still sell today. Karlovy Vary porcelain from the Thun works has been made in the region for over two hundred years.
